Eyeshadow primer vs. pigment gel: what to use
A primer and a pigment gel can play different roles. The right choice depends on your lid, your makeup and how concentrated you want the shimmer to look.
What is the difference?
An eyeshadow primer generally prepares the lid for eye makeup; its exact finish and benefits depend on the formula. A pigment gel provides a base onto which you press loose pigment in a specific area.
Neither name tells you everything about a formula. Check its directions, approved application areas and compatibility with the products you plan to layer. Face primer, eye primer and cosmetic adhesive are not automatically interchangeable.
When would you use pigment gel?
You can begin with a small amount of shimmer pressed onto a prepared lid. Gel is optional in the Shimmer Lovers application routine. Try it when you want a more concentrated placement or when you prefer working over a tacky base.
Use a little on the center of the lid for a focused accent, or over the area where you want a fuller shimmer finish. Avoid spreading it far beyond the intended shape.
How to apply a thin gel base
- Start with clean hands and a clean applicator.
- Spread a very thin layer of gel over the intended area.
- Let the layer become tacky, following the product directions.
- Pick up a small amount of pigment and press it into place.
- Check the result before adding another light layer.
If the pigment moves around, use less gel next time and allow more time for the base to settle. Adding a large amount of dry pigment to a wet layer can create an uneven finish.
Do you need both?
Not necessarily. Start with the simplest routine that works for you. If you already use an eye primer, let it settle before testing a small amount of gel and pigment over it. Different formulas do not always layer well, so try the combination before an important event.
There is no universal number of wear hours for every lid and every routine. Oil, rubbing, weather and the amount applied all affect the result.
